Leading western oil company is looking for Drilling Engineer Surveying.
Purpose – Drilling & Measurements Specific The Drilling Engineer specializing in Surveying (DE-S) is responsible for delivering high quality services both internally and to clients. Acting as an independent quality manager of the well positioning effort, the DE-S is a key member of the technical integrity delivery team. The DE-S is responsible for promoting and developing surveying expertise and survey management business opportunities throughout the Company organization, with a special focus on internal standards and quality control to support the delivery of Company services to clients. The SS will follow the Drilling Engineer training path in the equip program, with a special emphasis on surveying.
Responsibilities A. People • Understands Company well placement and drilling optimization strategy and has a working knowledge of the range of Company services. • Attends seminars and conferences as required to promote Company, and prepares technical material for publication both internally and externally. • Manages training, presentations and lunch and learn assignments, and speaks comfortably on the latest surveying techniques and practices. • Is fully committed to knowledge sharing and providing internal mentoring and coaching. • Maintains a thorough knowledge of client and industry standards and documentation related to survey quality, such as the Company Anti-collision Standard, BP Directional Survey Handbook and Shell Guidex. • Attends and contributes to the activities of the ISCWSA committee, and maintains a current knowledge of the latest survey technologies and publications. • Organizes and leads internal technical audits and external client audits as required to ensure that survey policies and procedures are being followed and updated to ensure best-in-class performance. B. Processes • Applies survey management techniques, manages and develops wellbore surveying and survey planning procedures to ensure the delivery of the well positioning objectives. • Responsible for the management and custodianship of the definitive directional planning database. • Advises on survey quality principles and the management of well collision risk. • Responsible for the quality assurance of all well surveys, and is the sign-off authority on all definitive surveys published to any internal or external customer. • Has a thorough knowledge of standard operating procedures for all types of survey tools, including all third party survey services available in the industry. • Monitors the integrity of survey programs, recommending quality requirements or contingencies as necessary. • Carries out survey data validation checks and investigates discrepancies or reduced quality surveys. • Monitors performance of third party surveying contractors, developing key performance indicators where required, and reporting this information regularly to management. • Provides technical support and recommends the best technical solution to OSC’s, Drilling Engineers and survey management clients as required. • Provides field level survey training for Drilling Engineers, Field Engineers, Directional Drillers and clients in surveying procedures and techniques. • Provides an interface between clients and Company’s technical departments to promote continuous improvement in all surveying services provided. • Provides prompt and efficient reporting internally and to clients. • Issues guidelines for control of survey data to and from rigsite.
Reports to The DE-S reports directly to the Drilling Engineering Manager.
Previous Experience & Competencies He/She is a Drilling Engineer following the equip training program with a special emphasis on surveying. He/She should have a thorough knowledge of surveying tools, their running methods and strengths and weaknesses at a technical and operational.
An up to date knowledge of the latest surveying techniques and performance models is also essential, particularly if the DE-S wishes to demonstrate added value by exploiting these techniques.

Behavior The DE-S has the functional and technical knowledge and skills to independently do the job at a high level of accomplishment. As each OSC implements the DE-S position, the DE-S is expected to initially dedicate about 80% of his/her time to establishing internal excellence in survey quality and training. Initially about 20% of his/her time should then be spent in direct client contact, and in developing external survey management revenue.
After the first 12-18 months of operation in the OSC, the DE-S is then expected to devote time to internal and external clients on an equal basis on average, and to independently develop survey management support and business services.
The fundamental role of the DE-S is to raise and maintain a high level of confidence and trust with all clients, internal and external, and he/she should provide a current, direct and positive impact on Company’s business. The DE-S maintains a high level of expertise in surveying, and is an effective communicator who can interact effectively with managers, peers and clients at all levels both written and verbally, to meet the expectations and of all internal and external customers.
