Devising a new tool was no easy task since it required overcoming several organizational and technical challenges within a very short timeframe (one year). In particular, project management was complicated by the geographical remoteness of project participants. The operations included employees from seven Target Subs and four contractors simultaneously, each with their own vision of the project priorities, goals and objectives.
Technical challenges were associated with various types of Target Sub equipment, a shortage and excessive workload of field technical specialists and the fact that over 100 rig sites are located in hard-to-reach areas. Another major hurdle involved integrating 17 software modules and data collection techniques of more than 20 contractor organizations providing drilling measurement and telemetry services, and streamlining all of these facilities into a single system.
The task was further complicated by a large variety of the business processes slated for automation (design, planning, analysis, monitoring and so forth) and the need to train more than 300 Company employees of various professions (managers, engineers, supervisors, and IT support).
